Water and Sanitation Hygiene (2023)
In 2023, Afghan Charity Week proudly partnered with Danish Foundation UK (DFUK) to deliver a transformative Water and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) project in Kabul, Afghanistan – bringing clean and safe water to a community of over 500 families.
With an estimated 8 in 10 people in Afghanistan consuming unsafe drinking water, the need for sustainable sanitation solutions is urgent. Through our ACW 2023 campaign, our student-led fundraising raised vital funds to help construct electrical water pumps and implement community -focused hygiene education across the region.

Project Execution and Phases
Despite facing bureaucratic hurdles due to shifts in governmental procedures, DFUK successfully obtained all legal permissions required for the project. The water well was constructed in the Masjid yard – a location carefully selected based on space availability, legal clearance, and optimal accessibility for the surrounding community.
The project was completed in two main phases:
Phase One: A large filtration system was installed approximately 10 metres from the water well to collect rainwater and redirect wastewater safely – mitigating the risk of future droughts and improving water sustainability.
Phase Two: The water well was drilled to a depth of 200 metres, taking into account the area’s geological landscape to ensure durability and consistent access to clean water.
Impact Goals
The community of Khair Khana, Kabul was selected after thorough evaluation by DFUK’s local team. The area demonstrated a significant lack of access to clean water and was home to hundreds of families relying on contaminated or distant water sources for daily needs.
Key Criteria was considered in the site selection included:
High population density with limited access to clean water
Local infrastructure gaps that could be addressed through electrical water pumps
Availability of legally approved, secure space for construction (Masjid yard)
Community willingness to participate in hygiene education initiatives
The decision to build in the Masjid area allowed the project to meet spatial requirements (over 15 meters for pump and filter placement) while ensuring maximum benefit to the local population.
Fund Distributions
ACW funds were strategically allocated across the WASH project:
Purchase and installation of an electrical water pump
Construction of a 200m deep well
Installation of a filtration system to recycle rain and wastewater
Labour and logistical costs associated with materials and drilling
DFUK managed all aspects of procurement, construction, and educational rollout, maintaining full transparency and compliance with local regulations. Updates, visual documentation, and an expense breakdown were provided to ensure accountability and build donor trust.
We are proud of this impactful collaboration with DFUK, which provided a sustainable, life-changing resource to hundreds of families in Kabul. The project represents ACW’s continued commitment to improving health, dignity, and quality of life across Afghanistan.
