Supporting Widows (2026)

This year, Afghan Charity Week is proud to support Mothers of Afghanistan through their Widow Sponsorship project. In Afghanistan, millions of people continue to live through deep humanitarian hardship. The 2025 humanitarian response plan estimates that 22.9 million people will require assistance, with widespread pressure on food, healthcare, and basic services.

For widowed mothers, that hardship is often even more severe. Many are left carrying the full responsibility of providing for their children in a country where women-headed households can face some of the greatest barriers to accessing support and opportunities. At the same time, women and children remain among the groups most affected by malnutrition, poverty, and instability.

Through this project, we hope to support widows who are doing all they can to keep their households going despite immense pressure. Widow sponsorship is not only about easing immediate hardship, but about helping mothers hold their families together with greater dignity, stability, and hope.

What the Project Will Do:

  • Support widowed mothers who are raising and providing for their children alone

  • Help vulnerable households manage urgent daily pressures and essential living costs

  • Reach women who may otherwise struggle to access consistent support

  • Provide assistance that helps families remain steadier during periods of hardship

These greenhouses are much more than farming tools. In a country facing harsh winters, limited access to arable land, and the escalating effects of climate change, greenhouses offer reliable ways to grow crops all year round – even in difficult conditions.

For women, this project opens the door to greater economic independence, allowing them to provide nutritious food for their families, generate income, and gain critical skills that strengthen their role within their communities.

Impact Goals

Through this project, we hope to support widows who are doing all they can to keep their households going despite immense pressure. Widow sponsorship is not only about easing immediate hardship, but about helping mothers hold their families together with greater dignity, stability, and hope.

  • Reduce the strain on widowed mothers carrying responsibility alone

  • Strengthen household stability for families facing ongoing hardship

  • Help mothers continue caring for their children with greater security

  • Support vulnerable families in a way that preserves dignity, not just survival

By supporting this campaign, donors will be helping mothers protect the wellbeing of their families in extremely difficult circumstances. In a context where economic pressure, service shortages, and humanitarian need remain widespread, even targeted support can make a meaningful difference to a household’s ability to cope.

Why Widow Sponsorship Matters

In Afghanistan, hardship does not fall evenly. When a mother loses her spouse, the burden on the household can become overwhelming. She may be responsible for food, rent, children, healthcare, and daily survival, all while facing a wider environment shaped by poverty, instability, and limited opportunity.

That is why widow sponsorship matters. It supports the person holding the family together. It helps protect children by strengthening the household around them. And it reminds vulnerable mothers that they have not been forgotten.

This project is simple in idea, but powerful in impact: when you support a widow, you support a family.
